Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurobiological disorder that affects approximately 3 to 5% of our population. Those diagnosed with ADHD, tend to struggle in various aspects of their lives such as organization, time management, prioritizing tasks, concentration, procrastination, planning ahead, and managing frustration. Executive functioning and working memory deficits, which also tend to be present in those diagnosed with ADHD, can be managed through learning how to compensate effectively.
At the age of 7, I was diagnosed with combined type ADHD and multiple learning disabilities. Although school presented many difficult challenges, I was able to receive my BA degree magna cum laude from Georgetown University, and received my graduate degree with honors at the University of Pennsylvania. I owe my learning success to working with an ADHD coach who gave me the tools with which to compensate in the areas where I had deficits. Today, I utilize many of those same strategies, together with new techniques and traditional counseling. When counseling children, I work with parents, to create behavioral plans useable both at home and school. These plans include, implementing effective study and test taking strategies, learning how to manage time, prioritize, organize, and sustain attention. In addition, I work on regulating emotions, and impulse control techniques, anger management and frustration tolerance strategies, as well as social skill and self-esteem building.
In working with adults, I use similar techniques, together with cognitive behavioral therapy to address self-defeating thoughts and behaviors. I also work on proper nutrition, exercise plans, and creating effective schedules to manage time efficiently.
In addition to ADHD coaching, I am also a certified CogMed Working Memory coach. CogMed is an evidence based computerized brain training program that is shown to be effective in increasing working memory/brain function by 80% in users who complete the program. I have successfully utilized this effective working memory training program with children, adolescent, and adult clients.
