ADHD Coaching

What is ADHD?

Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects up to 11 percent of school-age children and many adults*. Those diagnosed with ADHD tend to struggle in various aspects of their lives such as organization, time management, prioritizing tasks, concentration, procrastination, planning ahead, and managing frustration.

Executive functioning and working memory deficits, which also tend to be present in those diagnosed with ADHD, can be managed through learning how to compensate effectively.

My Experience with ADHD

At the age of 7, I was diagnosed with severe combined type ADHD, dyslexia, and multiple learning differences. Although school presented many difficult challenges, I was able to receive my BA degree magna cum laude from Georgetown University and received my graduate degree in social work with honors at the University of Pennsylvania. I owe my learning success to working with an ADHD coach who gave me the tools with which to compensate in the areas where I had deficits.

Today, I utilize many of those same strategies, together with new techniques and traditional therapy for children, adolescents, and adults with ADHD.

Childhood and Adolescent ADHD

Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects millions of children and often continues into adulthood. ADHD includes a combination of persistent problems such as difficulty with procrastination, time management, sustaining attention, and working memory deficits.

Children and adolescents with ADHD may also struggle with low self-esteem, troubled relationships, and poor performance in school. While symptoms sometimes lessen with age, many people never completely outgrow their ADHD symptoms.

ADHD coaching for children and adolescents includes:

  • Implementing effective study and test-taking strategies
  • Learning how to manage time
  • Prioritizing, organizing, and sustaining attention
  • Learning how to identify and regulate emotions
  • Impulse control techniques
  • Anger management and frustration tolerance strategies
  • Social skills and self-esteem building
  • And many more

While therapy will not cure ADHD, it can help a great deal with symptoms and provide strategies to be successful.

Adult ADHD

Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) includes many of the same combinations of difficulties experienced by children and adolescents. Once adulthood is reached, it can also lead to unstable relationships, poor and inconsistent work or school performance, low self-esteem, difficulties with organization and time management as well as other issues.

Adult ADHD symptoms may not be as apparent as ADHD symptoms in children and adolescents. In adults, hyperactivity may decrease, but struggles with impulsiveness, restlessness, and difficulty paying attention may continue.

Treatment for adult ADHD is similar to treatment for childhood and adolescent ADHD. However, adult ADHD treatment may also include a variety of different techniques, including:

  • Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) skills
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  • Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction
  • And many more

Furthermore, individualized behavioral interventions tailored specifically to your needs include:

  • How to structure your day and manage your time more effectively
  • How to regulate emotions
  • How to organize yourself more efficiently
  • How to better control your impulses

At times it can also include changes in diet and exercise as well as the use of medication.

Learn how to handle your daily challenges, maximize your potential, and lead a more successful and happier life.
